Purchase Price: $2.73
Purchase Place: McDonald’s
Rating: 2.0
Pros: Real chicken.
Cons: Plain bread. Plain chicken. Plain pickles. It’s a blatant rip-off from the Chik-fil-a sandwhich.
The Southern Style Chicken Sandwich was released in July, 2006. I just noticed it the other day. This just shows you how much I really pay attention to McDonald’s…although I bought a Big Mac from the same place last week.
From my gym, there is a McDonald’s, school Chik-fil-A and Burger King. I usually make a stop after the gym. The Chik-fil-A chicken sandwich is $2.75 and made from the chicken god himself. The amount of butter is usually just right and the chicken is especially juicy. The McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich is a blatant rip-off that is 0.02 cents cheaper than the Chik-fil-A sandwich here.
The pictures advertised are misleading. The chicken is not bigger than the bun and kind of dry, but it had a nice shape(oval). Everything about this sandwich is just spectacularly plain. I’m almost ashamed I paid more than $2.00 for such an inferior sandwich.

As someone who really enjoys the Chik-fil-a sandwich, here are the reasons this makes Chik-fil-a obsolete:
1. I don’t have to drive around looking for a Chik-fil-a anymore
2. I can get this on Sunday (my biggest gripe about Chik-fil-a) and in many cases 24 hours a day.
3. I can get it in a breakfast version (on Sunday freaking morning)
While the Chik-fil-a sandwich is marginally (and I can’t stress the word marginally enough) better, the three reasons above more than make up for the (marginal) taste differences.

I pretty much agree with you about this new sandwich. Here in Chicago, we are deprived of Chik-Fil-A. I haven’t had Chik-Fil-A in about 15 years so I barely remember how their sandwich tastes. I just know that it was good. The McDo sandwich looks nothing like that pic you posted. Pickles were on the top, and the piece of meat was way smaller than the bun. At the restaurant I went to, they wanted $2.99 for the sandwich. I balked at that and went for the combo for a little more money. If the chicken was that big, the sandwich would be a better deal. Or maybe keep the sandwich the same size but charge 99 cents instead. Overall, it was just so-so. I don’t see myself craving one in the future.

Chik-fil-a is creepy as hell:

I wouldn’t eat their freaky jesus chicken if THEY paid ME.
I’ll try this McDonalds abomination, but only because it’s a buck (with tea) today.

Okay, I tried it, and it tasted like a giant chicken mcnugget.
I asked for it without the sweet tea, to just get the sandwich for a dollar. The guy asked the manager, and said “sorry, you have to get the sweet tea too, it’s a promotion.”
So when the order arrived, I gave him my sweet tea. Made his day.

I was excited to have a chicken sandwich w/ pickles…I love pickles! And then I tried it and was really horrified. It has the WORST after taste!!!

I am a huge fan of Chik-fil-a, having grown up in South Carolina, and I stop into an establishment to fulfill my craving every time I head back South.
I was excited to see this new offering at McDonalds, as in NYC, I have no access to a Chik-Fil_A on a regular basis. In all honesty, the seasoning ain’t nearly as good, and I do love those waffle fries at Chik-Fil-A.
If I had a Chik-Fil-A conveniently nearby, I would gladly by-pass McDonalds on any day but Sunday for it. But given that I don’t, I am very pleased with McDonald’s nearly-as-good offering.

I tryed the southern chicken sandwhich and was really disappointed in the sandwhich. I generally like most of MacDonalds food but this one was a big joke. For the amount of money they charge they could as least put some mayo on the plain bun. I don’t get just the pickles and the pickle juice they put on the sandwich. Don’t waste your money on the sandwhich

I am not a big McDonald’s fan, but they have done an incredible job of making this Southern Style Chicken Sandwich. It is by far the best chicken sandwich they’ve ever had , and it is good enough to cut into Chick-Fil-A’s business since there are McDonald’s restaurants everywhere. The sandwich is moist, the bun steamed, and the seasonings are only slightly less perfect than Chick-Fil-A’s. I know some of you who posted against this sandwich are simply McDonald’s-haters, but you gotta give McDonald’s some credit for this one. For those of you who are complaining about just pickles on the sandwich, you clearly do not understand that this is designed to mimick the popular Chick-Fil-A sandwich which is delicious because of its simplicity.

Just an FYI in case you want to replace it, that’s a picture of the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich available on their website. I’m guessing at the time of this post, there wasn’t an easily available picture of the McDonald’s version.
Anyway, I have to say I’d rather have a Chick-fil-A sandwich if there was one handy but there isn’t any nearby and as the other posters have pointed out, McDonald’s are everywhere and the sandwich is pretty tasty.

Today I decided to try the new country style chicken sandwich from Mcdonalds as usual with all Mcdonalds sandwiches it was way to salty, nevertheless I proceeded to eat while i was driving home. As I was about to take the last bite, i realise this grey things was hanging from the what is suppose to be chicken. It this grey rubbery skin none like I have ever seen before. Immediately I had an upset stomach, wondering what in gods name did I just eat.
I would like to get whatever it is tested to see what it was, if anyone has any suggestion as to where i can go about getting that done i would appreciate it.
No more mcdonalds for me.

I just tried this crappy, so called “southern” chicken sandwich this past Memorial Day ‘08 w/e. As I went into the bag to grab out my grub, I noticed she gave me two. I was wondering why my meal was so expensive. So as I proceded to eat this “southern” sammich, all I could say evertime was “what makes this effin southern?” There’s no damn spice. To me, southern means spicy or flavorful at the most. Neither was found in this weak sandwich.
I came to the conclusion that picles mean southern. McKrunkels gets an “EF” grade for EPIC FAIL!
I’ll NEVER try this again.

chik fil-a rules. mcdonalds chicken sandwich sucks. I never had one but I believe you guys who have. but I have had the chik fil-a one. it’s ok not great. I like rally’s chicken sandwich better. Do you have a rally’s . I agree about the pickles. Pickles are added to alot of stuff in the south… potato salad, tuna salad, hamburgers, fried. ok bye

This sandwich sucks, which I can deal with. What I can’t hardly stomach is the radio ads that go on and on about people being so smart to come up with something new and better, and the girl who wants to “shake the hand” of whoever came up with the sandwich. What was to come up with? It’s a piece of breaded chicken on a bun with a few flimsy pickles. If it was on the dollar menu, it would be more appropriate. It should be called the plain-jane chicken sandwich of the century.

I was surprised at the variability between McDonalds restaurants – I think they are still figuring this out. I had one in LA and it was like a giant nugget done. Then I got one in Seattle (several – I have this at least once a week) and they’ve figured it out.
It isn’t Chik-fil-a – but as somene who grew up with ChikFilA loving it and totally deprived of it fo years I’m happty to be 80% close with a sandwich I can get in the middle of the night and on Sundays.
What *amazes* me is that it took them 25 years to suddenly discover this sandwich. This week I heard an ad for Kentucky Fried Chicken that offers an ‘original recipe’ chicken breast sandwich with the simplicity of just a few pickle slices on a soft bun.
Its not the Chik but it is the best attempt at chicken by McDonalds so far. (My previous favorite non Chik fast food sandwich was Wendy’s spicy crispy)
